Wolverine might've gotten his own movie-game, but my favorite X-Man was always Nightcrawler, and his teleportation power has been sadly unrepresented in gaming---until now. "Skwug" is a platformer built around that glorious violation of Newtonian physics, and it makes you wonder why so few developers have tried the mechanic before.
In fairness, it's pretty much impossible for a platformer to make sense when teleporting is an option, and "Skwug" really doesn’t. Why can I ‘port through empty space or fire but not walls or doors? But video games physics don't have to make sense, they just have to be fun, and teleportation in "Skwug" is gloriously liberating, providing the instant-gratification glee of a good bamf several times a level.
"Skwug" is by no means a perfect game. While the titular character is cutely animated, most of the visuals are numbingly generic-looking, and the music is inexpressive. Worse yet, a lot of the levels slip from satisfyingly hard to grindingly sadistic, demanding the kind of pixel-perfect routines that no one over the age of twelve should bother nailing.
But the gameplay remains incredibly fun, especially since the hardest challenges are reserved for optional bonuses. And the sheer number of levels will keep the dedicated player busy for a good long while, even if that while is going to include quite a few episodes of hurling your controller and stomping away in frustration.
